About Scott
Service record
I've been a game developer for over 25 years, the vast majority of them on massively multiplayer games. My credits include:
- Dark Age of CamelotTools, web, server programming
- AionTools
- City of HeroesTools
- Shroud of the AvatarNarrative design, programming, tools
- Star CitizenServer infrastructure
And, like every other experienced developer, a dozen other titles which never shipped and you likely never heard of.
The blog
I've also been a snarky blogger for even longer. I started at the turn of the century on a site called "The Rantings of Lum the Mad" (I was the aforementioned ranting Lum), which wrote a lot about MMOs and garnered quite a bit of attention. These days I write at Broken Toys, where I comment on online games, pretend to be smart about war and politics, and generally mouth off, though I tend to do that more on Bluesky since social media rots all of our brains equally, which appeals to my Menshevik tendencies.
On making games
Making games is a political act. It's the art of the possible. You have limited resources, you have to herd cats to get things done, and you have to keep perspective so you don't go insane.
On being sued by Hasan Piker
No, I'm not that Scott Jennings. I had the name first, actually.
Off duty
I play a lot of computer games: MMOs, strategy games, RPGs, the occasional shooter, and I'm especially fond of ancient Final Fantasy games. I also read entirely too much about Russian history, which goes some way to explaining August Storm.
